I finally got my Skippy! They combined a couple of classes in order to open a new phonics class this past week. I was pretty psyched, because I really do enjoy teaching phonics for the most part. I think it has to do with that I can see so much progress so quickly. Plus I can teach them in any way I want. I'm the first teacher they've had and they are a clean slate. Anyhow, another bonus to starting a new class is that most of the kids come in and don't have English names. That leaves me able to choose the most obsquire/fun names I can come up with. Yeah, I could go with the average/normal names, but trust me....after a while of having taught a bunch of Jennys, Amys, Teds and Johns, you get to the point when you just want something a little different. It's not their real name and it's not like it really has any profound effect on them. It's just an added little perk for me if I get them to choose some off the wall name that will do nothing other than make me smile. Thus, this is the list I came up with for a new boy to choose from yesterday:
Buster
Thadeus
Skippy
Gunter
Matthias
There were a few others as well, but I can't think of them. Either way, this kid was a little clueless and didn't even know what to do. I ended up calling Meg in, a Korean teacher, and she explained that he had to choose one. Again, he just stood there. He told Meg for me to choose. Thus, I got my Skippy!
Oh yeah...here are the names of the other kids in the class (and no, I didn't name Jenny...she already had the name....grrr!)
Darwin
Fidel
Ayanna
Jenny
Lious
Skippy
